Mechanical puffin brooch

Puffin brooches! As you may have noticed, I love puffins!

I always like to have some puffins with me, and I’ve collected some lovely brooches from other artists.

Making my Easter puffin made me realise I could make my own brooches – it was the first time I’d made a flat puffin, as previously I had only made 3d sculpted puffins. I used the puffin eye and beak canes I’ve made to use with my puffin sculptures, which is why they are so detailed. (I’ve popped a photo of one of my larger sculptures by the side

But also having made my Easter puffin, I realised I could make a mechanical brooch, so I made a flapping puffin! I am pleased with how it’s turned out. It’s made almost entirely from polymer clay which is cool!

The brooch got its preview at Automatafest, a three-day festival of automata held in Hastings, UK, from 9 to 11 May 2025. It was a great experience to meet so many of the automata makers I have been following online and see lots of inspiring automata. My brain is buzzing with ideas, but typically, I have a few other things keeping me busy. Hopefully, I will get some time to play soon!
